Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Access to clean and reliable water is essential for both human survival and economic activities. In rural areas such as Ibi Local Government Area (LGA) in Taraba State, the availability of water can directly influence the productivity of local communities. Water supply projects are often seen as a key intervention in enhancing the health and economic prospects of rural populations. Improved access to water boosts agricultural activities, as irrigation becomes more feasible, and it also allows small-scale industries and households to function more effectively, thereby contributing to rural economic growth.

However, despite the recognized importance of water, rural areas in Nigeria still face significant water supply challenges, which impede their economic development. In Ibi, various water supply projects have been initiated by government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to alleviate these challenges. This study will evaluate the impact of these water supply projects on local economies, focusing on agriculture, health, and small-scale enterprises.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite several water supply projects in Ibi LGA, the extent to which these projects have improved rural economies remains unclear. While many communities still struggle with access to potable water, there is a gap in understanding the direct correlation between water availability and local economic activities. This study seeks to investigate how water supply projects have influenced agricultural productivity, local businesses, and overall economic well-being in Ibi.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of water supply projects on agricultural productivity in Ibi.

  2. To assess how water access has improved small-scale businesses and household economies in Ibi.

  3. To identify challenges faced in the implementation and sustainability of water supply projects in Ibi.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How have water supply projects affected agricultural activities in Ibi?

  2. In what ways has access to water contributed to the growth of local businesses and household economies?

  3. What challenges have hindered the full impact of water supply projects on the local economy?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Water supply projects have significantly improved agricultural productivity in Ibi LGA.

  2. Access to water has led to growth in small-scale businesses and household incomes in Ibi.

  3. Implementation and sustainability challenges limit the full potential of water supply projects in Ibi.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will contribute valuable insights for policymakers, local authorities, and development agencies on the importance of water supply projects in rural economic development. The research will inform future planning of water-related interventions and help improve their design and impact on rural communities.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on water supply projects in Ibi Local Government Area, Taraba State, and their effect on local economies. Limitations include challenges in assessing long-term impacts and variations in the success of projects across different communities within Ibi.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Water Supply Projects: Initiatives aimed at providing clean, safe, and reliable water to rural communities.

  • Agricultural Productivity: The output of agricultural activities, which is often influenced by the availability of water for irrigation.

  • Small-Scale Businesses: Local enterprises typically involved in trade, services, or small manufacturing activities that can benefit from consistent water access.
